SK Telecom announced on the 23rd that its board of directors resolved to establish 'SK Hyper,' a new subsidiary specializing in AI Data Center (DC) business development, and to invest 750 billion KRW by 2030.
'SK Hyper' embodies the meaning of transcending all limits to unlock infinite possibilities and the commitment to rapidly expanding AIDC business at hyperscale levels.
SK Hyper will focus on business development to advance the construction of a 15GW AI data center in the mid-to-long term. It will be responsible for securing sites, building and operating substations, attracting customers, and commercializing the business.
SKT collaborates with SK Hyper, a 100% subsidiary, by making phased investments as needed until 2030 within the total investment limit.
SKT aims to gradually open a 5GW-scale AI data center by 2029 through the newly established corporation as its first-phase goal. Subsequently, considering market demand, it plans to sequentially expand to a total of 15GW-scale AI data centers by 2035. The company recently established the 'AI DC Integration Task Force' directly under the CEO to consolidate the group's full-stack AI capabilities.
SKT plans to build AI infrastructure across regions, starting with a GW-scale AI DC cluster in Ulsan, followed by additional GW-scale AI DCs in the Chungcheong and Southwest regions.
Jeong Seok-geun, head of SKT's AI CIC, was appointed as the inaugural leader of SK Hyper. The newly appointed CEO will concurrently serve as the head of the AI DC Integration Task Force, connecting SK Group's AI DC execution organizations organically and accelerating business initiatives.
