SK Telecom gathered its artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor, development, and investment subsidiary hubs scattered across Silicon Valley, U.S., into a single location. Analysis indicates that while enhancing operational efficiency, the company moved to maximize synergy among subsidiaries for global AI business.
According to the telecommunications industry on August 19, SK Telecom relocated its offices for SKT America and the SKT Innovation Fund located in Sunnyvale, California, to nearby Santa Clara.
This is where subsidiaries Sapyeon and Global AI Platform Corporation (GAP) are located, and with this relocation, four U.S. business sites have gathered in one place.
Gathering U.S. subsidiary business sites is a measure to increase operational efficiency. Previously, SKT America and the SKT Innovation Fund leased and used office space in a business center in Sunnyvale. Because the personnel of the two companies were not numerous and the offices of subsidiaries Sapyeon and GAP were located a 15-minute drive away, the need to consolidate them to save operating costs emerged.
Accordingly, it is known that the decision was made to move the offices of SKT America and the SKT Innovation Fund, which offer relatively high relocation cost and rental fee savings. In the case of Astra AI Infrastructure, another U.S. business site, it was not included in the relocation target because it serves as an East Coast hub.
The relocation decision is a tactical move to maximize synergy among subsidiaries through physical aggregation. The four companies serve as global hubs for the AI sector, which has emerged as SKT's core business.
Founded in 2021, Sapyeon is an AI semiconductor development company established by SK Telecom, SK Hynix, and SK Square. GAP was established in 2023 to expand into the U.S. market based on domestic business experience with the AI agent 'A.'. SKT America is an entity that oversees SK Telecom's U.S. business, and the SKT Innovation Fund is in charge of investments within the U.S.
It is interpreted as an intention to accelerate global market entry, including the U.S., by bringing together subsidiaries covering all areas of AI—from core AI infrastructure (semiconductors) to service, commercialization, and investment. It is expected that the collaborative framework among subsidiaries will be strengthened during processes such as collaboration and investment with promising startups.
SK Telecom is strengthening its expansion into the global AI market beyond the domestic mobile telecommunications market, which has reached growth limits. Beyond traditional telecommunications infrastructure, it has presented a full-stack business model spanning infrastructure to models and services as its competitiveness in the AI environment. Through the consolidation of subsidiaries, it is expected to pursue synergy not only in acquiring local global technologies and talent and supplying AI services, but also in securing global Big Tech as clients for domestic AI Data Centers (AIDC).
“We decided on the relocation in terms of efficiency resulting from operational management linkages among overseas business sites,” an official at SK Telecom said.
