Samsung Electronics will ensure that its AI glasses, tentatively named 'Intelligent Eyewear,' set to launch within the year, are compatible not only with Galaxy devices but also with other Android smartphones and Apple iPhones. While maintaining broad device compatibility, the company plans to differentiate itself by offering unique features when used in conjunction with Galaxy smartphones, watches, and Buds.
Choi Jae-in, Vice President and Head of XR Development at Samsung MX Division, stated during a product briefing in London on the 23rd (local time), “We plan to provide compatibility with other Android phones and iOS devices,” adding, “There will certainly be experiences that can only be realized within the Samsung ecosystem.”
The Intelligent Eyewear is equipped with high-performance cameras, sensors, microphones, and speakers, supporting hands-free functions such as message checking, real-time translation, navigation, information recording, and photo/video capture. The glasses rely on the smartphone for heavy computations, delivering necessary information based on the user's gaze and surroundings.
Choi categorized the Intelligent Eyewear as a complementary device that extends mobile AI experiences beyond the screen, rather than a standalone replacement for smartphones. He explained, “Incorporating high-performance computing into the glasses doesn't align well with the product concept,” adding, “It's more about expanding the experience centered around smartphones than being a 'post-smartphone' device.”
Samsung emphasizes open compatibility while highlighting interoperability with Galaxy devices as a competitive edge. Videos captured with the Intelligent Eyewear can be viewed via the Galaxy smartphone's Now Bar and Gallery app. Music played on the smartphone can be continued through the glasses, and apps like Samsung Notes, Interpreter, and Google Maps can also be used seamlessly on the Eyewear.
When paired with a Galaxy Watch, users can control calls, music, and notifications via the watch's display and gestures. Real-time access to workout data—such as heart rate and cadence—measured by the watch is also possible through the Eyewear. Connecting with Galaxy Buds allows music control via the Eyewear's touchpad or summoning Gemini AI.
Samsung Electronics prioritized not only connectivity features but also comfort and design, considering the characteristics of glasses-type devices. The company applied ultra-slim hinges, ultra-thin injection molding technology, lightweight materials such as titanium and aluminum, and incorporated a heat dissipation structure to balance left-right weight distribution, reduce pressure on facial contact points, and prevent heat transfer to the face.
Vice President Choi emphasized the difference from existing AI glasses like Meta, stating, “The approach and future technological direction are different.” He added, “Products that are uncomfortable to wear all day should not exist, so we believe our focus on lightweight design and comfort provides a clear advantage.”
The product's price, launch countries, and sales strategy are still under discussion with partners. Samsung plans to position the initial product in a premium tier and is considering sales through eyewear brands such as Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. In South Korea, the company intends to allow general optical shops to replace prescription and photochromic lenses.
Vice President Choi noted, “Rather than simply expanding sales channels, it's important for consumers to fully understand the product through fitting before purchasing.” He added, “We are discussing appropriate purchasing experiences and distribution methods with eyewear partners.”
