Kia is stepping up its push into Japan's electric commercial vehicle market with the launch of its purpose-built vehicle (PBV), the Kia PV5.
Kia plans to introduce both the PV5 Passenger and Cargo models in Japan, followed later by the PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle). The company also intends to expand its lineup with the launch of the larger PV7 model in 2028 as part of its long-term growth strategy in the Japanese market.
Kia's Japanese subsidiary, Kia PBV Japan, officially unveiled the PV5 in Tokyo on May 13 and began accepting local orders.
The PV5 released in Japan features a customized vehicle structure and advanced technologies designed to meet a wide range of business and lifestyle needs among Japanese consumers.
One of the key technologies is Kia's “Flexible Body System,” a PBV-specific modular platform that allows major components such as the body, doors, and tailgate to be reconfigured according to customer demand. The vehicle also supports V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) and V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) functions, enabling it to serve as an emergency power source during natural disasters such as earthquakes.
Built with a body length of 4,695mm and width of 1,895mm, the PV5 also offers a turning radius of 5.5 meters, allowing for efficient driving on Japan's narrow urban roads.
To improve convenience for local customers, Kia has additionally adopted the CHAdeMO charging standard commonly used in Japan.
Kia expects the PV5 to become a new alternative in Japan's still-limited electric commercial vehicle market while also helping address broader social issues such as rising logistics demand, labor shortages, and transportation gaps in regional areas.
To strengthen its presence in Japan, Kia has been cooperating with Japanese trading company Sojitz. In April last year, the companies established Kia PBV Japan, a new corporation wholly owned by Sojitz.
Kia PBV Japan currently operates seven dealerships and 52 service centers, including a directly managed showroom in western Tokyo. By the end of the year, the company plans to expand its network to 11 dealerships and 100 service centers.
Kim Sang-dae, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia's PBV Business Division, said, “The launch of the PV5 in Japan marks an important milestone demonstrating Kia's product competitiveness and brand credibility. Together with Kia PBV Japan, we aim to build long-term trust with Japanese customers and become a reliable partner supporting the transition to electrification.”
