LG Electronics has obtained designated testing laboratory status for the cybersecurity requirements of Europe's Radio Equipment Directive (RED), allowing the company to conduct certification testing in-house.
The designation will enable LG to reduce development time and costs by eliminating the need to send prototypes overseas for testing. It is also expected to lower the risk of information leaks involving security-sensitive products, since prototypes will no longer need to leave the company's facilities.
LG Electronics said on Aug. 11 that its Software Authorized Testing Laboratory, operating under the company's chief technology officer (CTO), had received the designation from global certification body TUV Rheinland.
The EU's Radio Equipment Directive requires products incorporating wireless communication technologies that are marketed in Europe to meet high standards for security and safety. Since last year, the scope of the cybersecurity requirements has expanded to include network protection against external attacks, personal-data protection, and safeguards against financial fraud.
With the designation, LG's Software Authorized Testing Laboratory can independently conduct the certification tests required for regulatory compliance. TUV Rheinland will issue certificates based on LG's in-house test results after reviewing the data, without requiring separate testing.
By reducing procedures involving overseas certification bodies, LG expects to respond more quickly to customers and incorporate a wider range of customer requirements with greater speed, strengthening its competitiveness in the process.
