Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will jointly develop a proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) model with French AI company Mistral AI for semiconductor design and manufacturing.
On Sept. 8, the two companies announced that they would build “semiconductor-specialized AI” to enhance productivity and precision across overall semiconductor operations by combining Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions (DS) Division semiconductor technology and manufacturing data with Mistral AI's high-efficiency AI model technology. This partnership was signed at the time of the South Korea-France summit.
Mistral AI also received a large-scale equity investment led by Samsung Electronics on this day. Through a Series D investment attraction on that day, it secured €3 billion and was recognized with an enterprise value of more than €21 billion. It is the record for the largest equity investment attraction in European tech company history in just three years since its founding. Samsung Electronics led this investment round, and the Scale-Up Europe Fund managed by EQT and existing investor PSG Equity participated as co-lead investors.
Samsung Electronics will utilize AI solutions including “Mistral Large,” Mistral AI's high-efficiency large language model (LLM), to develop a proprietary AI model optimized for the DS Division's unique data.
Samsung Electronics plans to sequentially apply this to data analysis, defect prediction, and process optimization at semiconductor design and manufacturing sites to shorten development periods and improve manufacturing efficiency and quality.
The two companies will build not only AI models but also an AI platform and operating system optimized for semiconductor operations together.
In particular, they plan to implement the AI model in an on-premise format that can be operated on Samsung Electronics' internal infrastructure, enabling safe utilization of semiconductor-related data, which is a national core technology, without transferring it externally.
Jun Young-hyun, Samsung Electronics DS Division head, said, “Together with Mistral AI, we will create a new standard for AI-based semiconductor innovation by building AI models and platforms specialized for the semiconductor industry.”
Taking this partnership as an opportunity, Samsung Electronics plans to accelerate the AI transformation of all business divisions, including semiconductors, and strengthen its competitiveness in the global AI semiconductor market.
Mistral AI is a company founded by AI researchers from Google DeepMind and Meta Platforms, Inc. centered on Arthur Mensch, CEO, and is a company representing the European AI ecosystem.
