LG Innotek is strengthening its sensing solution competitiveness by operating autonomous sensing data collection vehicles domestically.
On the 29th, LG Innotek announced that it is operating an 'autonomous sensing data collection vehicle' in South Korea in collaboration with autonomous driving software (SW) company Applied Intuition. This follows the strategic partnership agreement signed by the two companies in March to advance autonomous driving sensing solutions.
LG Innotek has begun operations centered in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi regions, and plans to operate a total of approximately 20 vehicles—including data collection and autonomous driving SW development vehicles—by 2028. The goal is to enhance the performance of various sensors that act as the “eyes” of autonomous vehicles by leveraging data collected in real-world road environments.
The data collection vehicles are equipped with various sensors, including cameras, radars, and LiDAR. By processing the collected driving data, LG Innotek can obtain diverse information recognized by the sensors, such as road conditions, vehicle movements, object positions, and weather changes. The company plans to combine the collected data with a virtual environment (digital twin) to improve individual sensor performance and validate the system.
LG Innotek is also advancing the development of 'sensor fusion' technology, which combines and calibrates image data from cameras, distance and speed data from radars, and precise 3D spatial data from LiDAR to more accurately recognize the surrounding environment. Additionally, the company is focusing on securing 'edge case' data—where recognition performance degrades under specific conditions—to enhance sensor accuracy and reliability.
During the data collection process, personal information such as pedestrian faces and vehicle license plates captured by vehicle cameras is de-identified to ensure security.
LG Innotek plans to accelerate its entry into the autonomous driving sensing market by utilizing data collected through its fleet operations. The company aims to secure new orders from North America, Europe, and other regions with integrated sensing solutions that encompass vehicle cameras, radars, and LiDAR.
The data collection vehicles will also be operated in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. By analyzing vast amounts of real-world autonomous driving data, LG Innotek intends to proactively identify and address improvement points across diverse environments, maximizing module performance.
Min Jong, LG Innotek CTO (Executive Vice President), stated, “Autonomous driving solutions are evolving from individual sensor performance enhancement to data-driven optimization of sensors and software together.” He added, “LG Innotek will rapidly capture the physical AI sensing market, including autonomous driving, by leading with our advanced integrated sensing solutions based on data.”
Meanwhile, LG Innotek plans to expand its global sensing technology leadership into the autonomous driving domain through this demonstration project, further solidifying its position in the future mobility core components market. Additionally, the company intends to broaden its business base beyond mobility into robotics and smart factories by leveraging its sensing technology and software integration capabilities.
