Samsung Electronics (005930) is adopting a tailored strategy for its Galaxy Z8 foldable smartphone series by offering different screen ratios, sizes and performance levels. Samsung aims to broaden the foldable user base with a new 4:3 model and increase its market share.
Samsung Electronics unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8 at Galaxy Unpacked 2026 at Old Billingsgate in London on July 22.
With the launch of the Galaxy Z8 series, Samsung has shifted its strategy to allow consumers to select a foldable phone suited to their intended use. The Galaxy Z Fold8 focuses on content consumption, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is designed for work and content creation. The Galaxy Z Flip8 emphasizes portability and quick, on-the-go interactions.
At the center of the revamped lineup is the Galaxy Z Fold8, which introduces a new 4:3 aspect ratio for its main display. Its wider, shorter screen and lighter design expand the Fold's use beyond its traditional role as a productivity device to include content consumption.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra retains the aspect ratio used by previous Fold models and targets consumers seeking top-tier performance. The Galaxy Z Flip8 is aimed at younger consumers with the lightest design yet in the Galaxy Z Flip series.
The hardware improvements are also intended to strengthen the experience offered by each model. Samsung has applied Flex Titanium to the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra for the first time, reducing crease visibility and improving durability.
Samsung also made the devices smoother and easier to open and close and increased screen brightness, improving the overall experience when viewing content or using the phones for extended periods.
Artificial intelligence is intended to make more efficient use of the foldable displays. On the Fold models' large screens, users can view their current content alongside the tasks being carried out by the AI.
On the Galaxy Z Flip8, users can access personalized information and key functions through the cover display without unfolding the device. Rather than simply adding new features, Samsung has redesigned the way AI is used for each form factor.
Samsung's decision to segment the lineup appears to reflect changes in the competitive landscape of the foldable smartphone market. As Chinese manufacturers emphasize ultra-thin and lightweight designs, it has become increasingly difficult to differentiate products solely by thickness and weight.
Apple is also expected to introduce a foldable phone with a 4:3 display. In response to these challenges, Samsung has chosen to widen consumer choice by addressing the market with content-focused, high-end and compact models.
Samsung plans to improve both hardware quality and AI experiences optimized for each form factor, attracting new foldable users while also encouraging existing customers to upgrade.
“The new Galaxy Z series is Samsung's most refined foldable lineup yet,” TM Roh said. “Samsung will advance the mobile experience and usher in the next era of intelligence by providing services tailored to individual users.”
