Samsung Electronics has begun preparations for a second-generation Tri-Fold smartphone scheduled for release next year. After expanding its foldable lineup this year with a new 4:3 aspect-ratio model, Samsung is expected to offer four foldable devices next year, including the dual-folding Tri-Fold.
Samsung also plans to introduce a Pro model to the Galaxy S27 series in the first half of next year. Under its “4+4” strategy, the company aims to launch four flagship smartphones in the first half and four foldable models in the second half, broadening consumer choice and strengthening its position in the premium smartphone market.
According to industry sources on July 26, Samsung has shared details of its next-generation Tri-Fold project with suppliers and entered the early stages of development.
A source familiar with the matter said Samsung is preparing four foldable models for next year, including the successor to the Tri-Fold. While specifications have yet to be finalized, the display size is expected to remain similar to the first-generation model.
The Tri-Fold is a foldable smartphone that folds inward twice. Samsung introduced the first Galaxy Z Tri-Fold in December 2025, making it the first commercially available smartphone with an inward dual-fold design. It features a 9.96-inch OLED main display and a 6.49-inch external OLED display. The nearly 10-inch, 4:3 main screen provides a larger viewing area for videos, games and other content.
One Tri-Fold user said the larger display makes one-handed use difficult because of the added weight, but delivers a significantly better experience for watching videos and playing mobile games than Samsung's previous Fold models.
A key question is whether Samsung will increase production volumes for the second-generation model. Although the first-generation device generated strong market interest, production was limited to about 30,000 units.
Another industry source said the first Tri-Fold prioritized showcasing Samsung's technology rather than profitability because of its high manufacturing costs. Although no final decision has been made, production volumes are expected to increase after the company tested market demand with the first model.
Because development started relatively early, industry sources say the new Tri-Fold could debut alongside the Galaxy Z9 series around July next year rather than as a separate special-edition release.
Earlier this week, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z8 lineup—including the Fold8 (Wide Fold), Fold8 Ultra and Flip8—at its Galaxy Unpacked event in London. The addition of the Tri-Fold next year would expand Samsung's foldable lineup to four models.
Samsung also plans to introduce a Pro model to the Galaxy S27 flagship series next year, joining the existing base, Plus and Ultra variants.
Industry observers said Samsung's “4+4” strategy—launching four premium conventional smartphones in the first half of the year and four foldable models in the second half—is intended to address a wider range of consumer demand while accelerating the mainstream adoption of foldable devices.
