LG Electronics has supplied its next-generation 5G smart telematics solution to European automakers.
On the 19th, LG Electronics announced that it has applied its 5G smart telematics solution, based on the latest 5G communication standard (Release 16), to mass-produced European vehicles. This marks the first time in the industry that an R16-based telematics solution has been implemented in a European production vehicle.
Telematics solutions convert external signals into data to control and manage vehicles. R16 is a standard that enhances performance and safety compared to the previous R15. The data error rate is 0.001%, and the data transmission delay between the telematics module and base station is 0.001 seconds (1ms). This represents improvements of 100 times and 5 times, respectively, over 4G.
The R16-based smart telematics supports large-capacity data transmission, providing a communication environment suitable for autonomous driving, where fast response and safety are critical. It is an essential infrastructure for the era of software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and AI-driven vehicles (AIDVs).
LG Electronics minimized signal loss between components by integrating the next-generation smart telematics solution with a communication module and up to 12 antennas into a single hardware unit. The simplified wiring structure and spatial layout reduced installation space and lowered costs.
The stability and reliability of the smart telematics were also enhanced. The solution ensures stable performance even in high-temperature desert environments by maintaining excellent connection quality.
LG Electronics plans to advance its software solution 'LG AlphaWare,' which realizes SDVs and AIDVs, based on the supply of next-generation smart telematics. LG AlphaWare consists of in-vehicle entertainment solutions 'PlayWare' and augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR)-based 'MetaWare.'
LG Electronics intends to strengthen its leadership in the vehicle component business specialized for SDVs and AIDVs. According to market research firm Tech Insights, LG Electronics maintains the top market share in the global telematics market.
Eun Seok-hyun, President of LG Electronics' VS Business Division, stated, “We will continue to introduce innovative solutions in the vehicle communication sector, which has become a core competitiveness in mobility, to solidify our leadership in the telematics market beyond SDVs and into the AIDV era.”
