Samsung Electronics has retained its position as the leader in the DRAM market share for the third quarter, with continued growth driven by expanded sales of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM).
Market research firm Counterpoint Research announced on the 5th that Samsung Electronics held the top spot in the Q3 DRAM market share at 38%, followed by SK Hynix at 29%, Micron at 21%, and CXMT at 9%.
According to Counterpoint Research's findings, Samsung had temporarily lost the top position to SK Hynix in Q1 of the previous year due to difficulties in HBM supply. However, it regained the lead in Q4 of the same year by securing HBM supply for major AI semiconductor clients and leveraging its DRAM production capabilities.
Counterpoint Research noted that the global DRAM market's total revenue reached nearly $200 billion in Q3, a fivefold increase compared to the same period last year. While bit shipment volume grew by only 4%, the rise in average selling price (ASP) was the primary driver of revenue growth.
Choi Jung-gu, a responsible analyst at Counterpoint Research, stated, “AI has transformed memory from a general-purpose resource into a scarce, high-value asset, shifting the competition from price negotiations to securing supply.” He added, “With prices continuing to rise, suppliers are expected to set new revenue records in the coming quarters.”
