Genesis on Aug. 13 unveiled a next-generation hybrid system designed to deliver a driving experience closer to that of an electric vehicle. The new powertrain will make its debut in the GV80 Hybrid, a large SUV scheduled for launch next month.
The Genesis 2.5 Turbo Hybrid system uses a parallel layout with a P1 motor for engine starting and power generation, and a P2 motor for propulsion and regenerative braking.
The system produces a combined maximum output of 352 PS and a combined peak torque of 54.0 kgf·m. Compared with the existing GV80 2.5 Turbo gasoline model, maximum output is up about 16% and peak torque has increased 26%.
The GV80 Hybrid accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 7.1 seconds, while its combined fuel economy is more than 25% better than that of the existing model.
The 2.5 Turbo Hybrid is also the first Hyundai Motor Group system to use a water-cooled battery, improving thermal management and discharge performance.
Genesis designed the system to maximize EV-mode driving from launch through about 30 km/h. This is intended to reduce vibration and noise during cold starts while significantly expanding EV-mode operation in stop-and-go city traffic.
The new system also incorporates structural improvements. By operating the P2 motor in reverse for backing up, Genesis eliminated reverse-gear components from the transmission. The change reduces transmission weight and improves power-delivery efficiency.
The powertrain includes several hybrid-specific features, including Stay Mode, which lets occupants use convenience features from the high-voltage battery without starting the engine; Hybrid Predictive Control, or HPC, which anticipates the driving route to select the optimal drive mode; and smart regenerative braking.
Genesis also revealed the exterior and interior design of the GV80 Hybrid. The model features a dedicated front grille and wheels, while the cabin adds four new two-tone color options, real-wood trim and quilted-pattern details for a more premium appearance.
“The new powertrain is a carefully engineered system that balances efficiency, quietness and driving performance,” said Si-hyuk Lee, executive vice president and head of the Genesis Business Division. “Starting with the GV80 Hybrid, we will proactively respond to changing market conditions and customer needs.”
