BYD's plug-in hybrid SUV, the Sealion 6 DM-i, is drawing attention in South Korea as owners launch their own long-distance driving challenges.
Initial interest centered on its starting price in the KRW37 million range. Since customer deliveries began late last month, however, the conversation has shifted to real-world range reports that in some cases exceed the vehicle's official figures.
Owners have shared reports of completing a Seoul-Busan round trip or traveling roughly 1,000 to 1,200 km on a single full charge and tank of fuel. Some test-drive accounts have also reported a maximum range of up to 1,400 km, fueling wider interest in how far the SUV can actually travel under real driving conditions.
The spontaneous sharing of fuel-economy and range data is unusual in South Korea's plug-in hybrid market, where owners are effectively testing how far the vehicle can go before it needs to be refueled and recharged.
The Sealion 6 DM-i is certified by South Korea's Ministry of Environment for up to 70 km of all-electric range on a full charge. It is equipped with an 18.3-kWh LFP Blade Battery and a fuel tank of about 60 liters.
Reaching a total range of 1,400 km would require the vehicle to travel approximately 1,330 km after its initial 70 km in EV mode. That would translate to real-world fuel economy of around 22.2 km per liter, assuming the remainder of the journey is powered by the gasoline engine and regenerative braking.
At the heart of the vehicle is BYD's proprietary DM-i powertrain, an electric-first plug-in hybrid system. The electric motor handles most driving, particularly in urban and low-speed conditions, where it can deliver quiet and responsive performance. When the battery charge is low or additional power is needed, the high-efficiency gasoline engine steps in to recharge the battery or supplement propulsion.
The system also captures energy normally lost during deceleration through regenerative braking, helping improve overall efficiency.
Actual range will vary depending on driving conditions, terrain, temperature and driving style. Still, the growing number of owner-led real-world range tests is positioning the Sealion 6 DM-i as a potential option for consumers seeking a long-distance electrified vehicle without the charging concerns of a fully electric car.
